I'm Alexz! Mom of two littles, wife, musician, self-proclaimed homesteader and the soul behind this store. Caribou Market was inspired by two very important people in my life; my late Grandfather, and my late sister.
Upon returning home from WWII as a war hero, Andrew Young Heggie bought up 400 acres in the intermontane region of British Columbia, called the Cariboo. The name is a reference to the caribou that were once abundant in the region. There, he would survive his trauma by offering guided tours of his land. His resilience, and servitude has his uniform forever framed in a museum in France.
Fast forward to coffee in one hand, and the find of a lifetime in another; my sister Mack and I would spend a lot of our young adulthood together, rummaging through secondhand markets. Her dream was to own a successful, sustainable market of her own, where she could offer customizable, thrifted finds.
One day, in 2021, during a seasonal clothing switchover, I realized how many special, unique pieces I had acquired throughout my travels, film & TV career. Caribou Market was born.
I started this market to be an example of how historical and unique used pieces can be, but also how sustainable it is to make something used, new again. Each item I choose to sell has been curated and loved, and just get better with wear. I'm very selective in what I offer, and I like to post items as I find them, organically.
Every penny earned through Caribou Market, goes directly into building and keeping this store alive, as well as sustaining our families dreams in farming and gardening.
We hope you enjoy shopping with us!
